Research

I am interested in novel forms of matter emerging from the collective quantum mechanical behaviour of many particles. In my research, these particles may be electrons in certain solid-state materials and devices or a collection of atoms at "ultracold" temperatures.

Most of my current research is on so-called topological phases: in these systems particles develop a strange kind of order that has no local order parameter (like magnetisation is for ferromagnets), but which appears through nonlocal "topological invariants" (abstract analogues of the integer counting the twists of the locally featureless strip on the right). This strange order has a number of striking consequences, such as the emergence of conducting boundaries immune to backscattering by impurities, or exotic particles that underlie novel schemes for quantum information processing.
